Active continental extension : The Woodlark Basin
نویسنده
چکیده
n October 1995, a four-day multi channel seismic and bottom sampling survey was conducted aboard the R/V Ewing in the Pacific’s western Woodlark Basin. This site augmentation effort, supported by USSSP, was associated with JOIDES Proposal #447. New data from this survey provide further evidence for active extension on a low-angle (~25) normal fault but do not support a metamorphic core complex origin for Moresby Seamount.

Petrological and geodynamical constraints of Chaldoran basaltic rocks, NW of Iran: evidence from geochemical characteristics
Chaldoran area in NW of Iran has Mesozoic oceanic crust basement. The studied rocks of this region can be divided into three groups: ophiolitic gabbros and pillow lavas, ophiolitic volcanoclastics and Eocene lava flows. Ophiolitic mafic rocks show continental volcanic arc natures and Eocene lava flow shows OIB-like nature. During the Mesozoic, the Chaldoran region was situated in the active cont...
متن کاملRift basins and supradetachment basins: intracontinental extensional end-members
Two end-members characterize a continuum of continental extensional tectonism: rift settings and highly extended terrains. These different styles result in and are recorded by different extensional basins. Intracontinental rifts (e.g. East Africa, Lake Baikal) usually occur in thermally equilibrated crust of normal thickness. Rift settings commonly display alkali to tholeiitic magmatism, steepl...
متن کاملSynchronous oceanic spreading and continental rifting in West Antarctica
Magnetic anomalies associatedwith new ocean crust formation in the Adare Basin off north-western Ross Sea (43–26Ma) can be traced directly into the Northern Basin that underlies the adjacent morphological continental shelf, implying a continuity in the emplacement of oceanic crust. Steep gravity gradients along the margins of the Northern Basin, particularly in the east, suggest that little ext...
متن کاملCenozoic Soldiers Pass Volcanic Field, Central Utah—implications for the Transition to Extension-related Magmatism in the Basin and Range Province
The Basin and Range Province of the western United States is one of Earth’s most studied regions of continental rifting, and yet the timing and character of the onset of Cenozoic extension are still controversial. Some structural studies have concluded that extension in the Great Basin part of the Basin and Range Province is as old as 41–37 Ma (Rahl and others, 2002) or 32–30 Ma (e.g., Axen and...
متن کاملEarly-stage rifting of the northern Tyrrhenian Sea Basin: Results from a combined wide-angle and multichannel seismic study
[1] Extension of the continental lithosphere leads to the formation of rift basins and ultimately may create passive continental margins. The mechanisms that operate during the early stage of crustal extension are still intensely debated. We present the results from coincident multichannel seismic and wide-angle seismic profiles that transect across the northern Tyrrhenian Sea Basin. The profil...
